Bethesda, Md. – March 4, 2010 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) is teaming with its service partners, Satcom Global (Americas) and IonEarth, to provide satellite voice and data services for the Iditarod^®Sled Dog Race, which begins March 5 in Anchorage, Alaska.

IonEarth is equipping each of the participating sleds with a lightweight battery-powered GPS tracking device, which will transmit the sled's location, speed, heading, altitude and air temperature every 15 minutes through the Iridium satellite network to provide a vital safety communications lifeline for the race's mushers, dogs and volunteers. Race officials and fans can view the latest position and status of each competitor on a 3-D map on the Iditarod Website (www.iditarod.com). This not only comes in handy for race monitoring, but also because it allows for a regular stream of data on the racers and sled dogs. The racers themselves will not be able to view the data from the trackers in the field, preserving the tradition of self-sufficiency and independence in competing against each other and fighting the elements.

Satcom Global (Americas) is deploying 55 Iridium satellite phones which will be used by race officials and volunteers during the race.

The Iditarod trail, which snakes across more than 1,000 miles through the Alaskan wilderness from Anchorage to Nome, covers some of the world's harshest terrain. Most of the route – particularly through the center of Alaska – is not covered by terrestrial landlines, cellular networks or other satellite communication services.

Under the development contract, Hughes will design and supply a fully tested, turnkey ANC system, which will be integrated with Iridium's existing system, together with training and maintenance. PHOENIX – January 20, 2010 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) today unveiled its next-generation "Iridium 9602" satellite data transceiver at its annual Partners Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Iridium 9602 is a full-duplex short-burst data (SBD) transceiver designed for embedded applications in the rapidly growing market for remote asset tracking and monitoring solutions. The product, which is the culmination of a two-year R&D program, has completed prototype testing, and Iridium expects to begin commercial deliveries in June.

"The smaller, lower-cost Iridium 9602 will serve as the data communication engine for a wide range of portable tracking and monitoring devices, leveraging Iridium's global coverage and low-latency, two-way data links," said Don Thoma, executive vice president for marketing at Iridium. "Our service partners are already testing prototypes in their Iridium 9602-based solutions for applications such as tracking soldiers and military vehicles in the field, telemetry from unattended sensors, fleet management, enterprise logistics and supply-chain visibility, as well as personal two-way navigation and mapping devices."

"The matchbox-sized Iridium 9602 is 69 percent smaller, 74 percent lighter and considerably less expensive than the first-generation Iridium 9601 SBD modem, which we designed the Iridium 9602 to replace," said Thoma. "The very small form factor and low power consumption will offer greater flexibility to value-added manufacturers (VAM) and resellers (VAR) embedding the Iridium 9602 into their products."

A unique feature of the Iridium 9602 is its built-in GPS input/output ports which will permit system integrators to interface with an external GPS receiver, using a single dual-mode L-Band antenna for GPS and Iridium SBD, saving the cost of an antenna in their applications.

The duplex data links provided by the Iridium 9602 will permit two-way communications to and from the remote devices, allowing users to reprogram the unit, adjust its reporting intervals and send on-demand queries for specific data updates. It will also enable first responders and search-and-rescue authorities to respond to emergency distress signals from personal location and tracking devices.

"Prototype evaluations from Iridium's service partners have been positive," Thoma said. "More than 90 companies are working on plans to embed the Iridium 9602 in their next-generation products."

"Our phase-out program for the Iridium 9601 will allow for ample overlap with the Iridium 9602, to ensure that our VAMs and VARs will be able to transition seamlessly to the new technology," said Thoma.

According to a November 2009 report by TMF Associates, the number of low data rate mobile satellite service (MSS) devices is projected to grow from 1.5 million active terminals at the end of 2009 to more than 3.1 million active terminals by the end of 2013, a compound annual growth rate of 21 percent. Tim Farrar, a satellite industry analyst and author of the report, said, "Low-cost portable satellite tracking and messaging devices are an important new opportunity, and represent one of the fastest growing parts of the low data rate MSS market. The introduction of two-way connectivity will further stimulate market growth, particularly among professional users who may have been reluctant to rely on one-way satellite devices offering no assurance that a message has been received."

Program Aims to Reduce Collisions between Ships and Whales in Western Mediterranean Basin

BETHESDA, Md. – (Marine NewsWire) December 22, 2009 – Chrisar Software Technologies (Chrisar), an IT company specializing in software systems engineering and signal processing in the marine environment, chose Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE) to develop a satellite data solution for a whale reporting program that uses the global satellite network operated by Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM).

The Real-time Plotting of Cetaceans (REPCET) program is being deployed in the Pelagos Sanctuary for Marine Mammals, a conservation area in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. An estimated 3,000-5,000 sperm and fin whales live in this region, which has a very high density of shipping traffic, including high-speed ferries, which pose a danger to whales on or near the surface of the ocean. Whale collisions can injure or kill the animal and also cause significant damage to the ship and its passengers and crew.

ASE is using the Iridium short-burst data (SBD) modem with specialized software customized for this application. Watchstanders on participating ships will use the system to record and transmit reports of whale sightings through the Iridium network to a central server, which will save it into a database and transmit warnings via Iridium to all subscribing ships whose tracks are likely to take them close to the animals.

"Iridium's SBD service was chosen for this program because of its very low-latency, high network quality and two-way data links, which are critical components in this application," said Jeff McFarland, president of ASE.

"The centralized system server-client architecture and database, along with Iridium's global coverage, will facilitate rapid deployment of this unique service in other regions of the world," added Patrick Mugnier, Chrisar managing director.

The pilot REPCET project is a collaborative effort managed by Chrisar and Souffleurs d'Ecume, a non-governmental organization specializing in applied environmental engineering with a principal focus on marine mammal conservation. Trials are underway on a small number of ships, and large-scale dissemination is planned for 2010.

"We are targeting passenger transport companies as our first priority, since these vessels operate daily at significant speeds, which statistically increases the risk of collision," said Pascal Mayol, Souffleurs d'Ecume director. "We are also in the process of expanding the program to encompass all types of vessels, such as merchant ships, private yachts, navy craft, fishing boats and racing sailboats, some of which have already expressed interest in subscribing."

"We are taking special care to screen the applications for participation through an ethical commission, to ensure the system is not used for harmful purposes, such as unauthorized whaling," Mayol added.

Commercial Fishing Vessels Switch To Iridium OpenPort® For Reliable, Cost-Effective Voice And Data Communications

BETHESDA, Md. – December 15, 2009 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) reports that its Iridium OpenPort® marine satellite system is winning an enthusiastic reception from commercial fishing fleets around the world.

One specific example is FV Aart Maaskant (UK95), which was one of the first Dutch commercial fishing vessels to be fitted with Iridium OpenPort. Gannexion BV, an Iridium service partner, installed the Iridium high-bandwidth terminal to replace the existing satcom system on the 42.36-meter beam trawler, which operates in the North Sea.

Jan de Boer, the vessel's owner and captain, said, "Iridium OpenPort is always online. It sends our e-mails faster in comparison to the satcom system we used previously, and it gives us the possibility to download the latest news to stay up to date with what is happening in the world."

"Iridium OpenPort equipment cost and airtime charges are substantially lower than those of other satcom systems we considered," said de Boer.

The crew is using the free e-mail service offered by Gannexion BV to send and receive messages at sea. The e-mail software also permits them to access Websites to download information on an adjustable schedule.

"The captain sets the Iridium OpenPort terminal to automatically receive the weather forecast twice a day," said Patrick Albers, service engineer, Gannexion BV. "This way they don't need an extra subscription with a third party who will charge them for sending the weather forecast. Iridium OpenPort will also be an ideal solution for transmission of daily catch reports to meet future e-logbook regulatory requirements."

Samherji HF, a major Icelandic seafood company with vessels operating around the world, has installed Iridium OpenPort on two of its trawlers under a service contract with Síminn and AST. Samherji's electronics engineer, Kristinn Danielsson, said, "Iridium OpenPort provides excellent coverage and performance even when we are fishing in Arctic waters that are not reliably served by other satellite services."

Síminn, Iceland's primary telecoms company, installed the systems on the Samherji vessels.

BETHESDA, Md. – December 15, 2009 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) reports that its Iridium OpenPort® marine satellite system is winning an enthusiastic reception from commercial fishing fleets around the world.

One specific example is FV Aart Maaskant (UK95), which was one of the first Dutch commercial fishing vessels to be fitted with Iridium OpenPort. Gannexion BV, an Iridium service partner, installed the Iridium high-bandwidth terminal to replace the existing satcom system on the 42.36-meter beam trawler, which operates in the North Sea.

Jan de Boer, the vessel's owner and captain, said, "Iridium OpenPort is always online. It sends our e-mails faster in comparison to the satcom system we used previously, and it gives us the possibility to download the latest news to stay up to date with what is happening in the world."

"Iridium OpenPort equipment cost and airtime charges are substantially lower than those of other satcom systems we considered," said de Boer.

The crew is using the free e-mail service offered by Gannexion BV to send and receive messages at sea. The e-mail software also permits them to access Websites to download information on an adjustable schedule.

"The captain sets the Iridium OpenPort terminal to automatically receive the weather forecast twice a day," said Patrick Albers, service engineer, Gannexion BV. "This way they don't need an extra subscription with a third party who will charge them for sending the weather forecast. Iridium OpenPort will also be an ideal solution for transmission of daily catch reports to meet future e-logbook regulatory requirements."

Samherji HF, a major Icelandic seafood company with vessels operating around the world, has installed Iridium OpenPort on two of its trawlers under a service contract with Síminn and AST. Samherji's electronics engineer, Kristinn Danielsson, said, "Iridium OpenPort provides excellent coverage and performance even when we are fishing in Arctic waters that are not reliably served by other satellite services."

Síminn, Iceland's primary telecoms company, installed the systems on the Samherji vessels.

(NASDAQ: IRDM) reports that it has completed numerous technical studies, working with independent technology partners, that demonstrate the feasibility of hosting earth observation and remote sensing payloads on its planned/proposed next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT.

"Independent, detailed technical studies led by Iridium for the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) have confirmed that Iridium's planned next-generation constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) cross-linked satellites can provide a unique and unprecedented capability for a wide range of remote sensing missions for monitoring global climate data and other environmental data," said Dr. José Achache, director of GEO, an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. "GEO is creating a framework for governments and industry to explore how new data-providing sources, such as Iridium NEXT, can support the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) by delivering required water and climate observations."

"The earth observation community has a unique window of opportunity, starting now, to augment our ability to capture earth climate, weather and environmental data through hosted payloads on Iridium NEXT," said Achache. "It's important to act quickly to ensure the secondary payloads can be included on the Iridium NEXT satellites, which will be launched between 2014 and 2016."

In addition to the GEO studies, Iridium has completed several technical studies for U.S.-based space agencies examining specific hosted payload possibilities with Iridium NEXT. These include Global Positioning System radio occultation (GPSRO) to measure global atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles; broadband radiometers for measuring the earth's radiation budget; solar total and spectral irradiance measurements; radar altimetry to detect sea surface and ice heights; multi-spectral imagers for ocean and land color, deforestation and desertification; and to validate the feasibility of commercial monitoring of ozone levels in the earth's atmosphere.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is also investigating the feasibility of hosted payloads on the Iridium NEXT constellation to support requirements for space situational awareness.

"Hosted payloads on Iridium NEXT represent public-private partnership at its best," said Lee Demitry, Iridium's executive vice president for Iridium NEXT. Lockheed Martin and Thales Alenia Space are competing to become the prime contractor for Iridium NEXT and both companies are designing hosted payloads accommodation in their proposed Iridium NEXT satellite design. Iridium plans to announce its Iridium NEXT prime contractor selection in the coming months.

Iridium Reports Third Quarter 2009 Results

BETHESDA, Md. – November 12, 2009 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) (the "Company") today reported financial results for its operational predecessor, Iridium Holdings LLC ("Iridium"), for the period from July 1, 2009 through September 29, 2009 (the "third quarter period"). These results do not reflect the financial results of Iridium Communications Inc. On September 29, 2009, GHL Acquisition Corp. completed its acquisition of Iridium and changed its name from GHL Acquisition Corp. to Iridium Communications Inc. The Company is now traded on the NASDAQ Global Market.

Iridium Operating Highlights

The following financial results for the third quarter period demonstrate Iridium's operating strength despite the global economic downturn.

-       Operational EBITDA increased 28.4% to $38.4 million in the third quarter period from $29.9 million in the third quarter of 2008.

-       Net income decreased 11.2% to $15.0 million in the third quarter period from $16.9 million in the third quarter of 2008 which, in part, reflected acquisition-related expenses of $10.5 million and $1.8 million respectively. Excluding these expenses, net income would have increased $6.8 million or 36 %.

-       Subscribers were up 16.1% to approximately 359,000 at the close of the third quarter period from approximately 309,000 at the close of the third quarter of 2008.

-       Commercial service revenue increased 23.0% to $43.9 million in the third quarter period compared to $35.7 million during the third quarter of 2008.

-       Government service revenue increased 2.1% to $19.4 million in the third quarter period compared to $19.0 million in the third quarter of 2008.

-       Subscriber equipment revenue for the third quarter period declined 37.0% to $21.1 million compared to $33.5 million in the third quarter of 2008. The Company believes that this is due, in large part, to the downturn in the global economy, which disproportionately impacted equipment sales.

-       Overall revenue decreased 4.3% to $84.4 million in the third quarter period from $88.2 million in the third quarter of 2008.

"Iridium grew its subscriber base and generated strong recurring revenue in the third quarter, despite a weak global economy," said Matt Desch, CEO of the Company. "Our results should allow us to deliver $126 – 130 million in Operational EBITDA for the full year – a growth rate of 13% to 17% in a difficult economy. Our operating results clearly demonstrate the unique value of our global service offerings and the resilience of our business model. Growth in commercial service revenue reflects strong, recurring demand by our growing subscriber base. While equipment revenue remains an important and profitable part of our business, it has been adversely affected by recent economic weakness. With the completion of the acquisition, we've achieved a significant milestone towards providing the resources to support the continued growth of the Company. Our full focus now is on growing and serving our subscriber base, growing our revenue stream, and finalizing our plans to develop and launch our next generation constellation, Iridium NEXT."

Corporate Highlights

            "As a result of completing our transaction, we have an excellent platform from which to embark on financing, building and launching Iridium NEXT," said Eric Morrison, CFO of the Company. "At the end of the third quarter period, our strong operating results, combined with our balance sheet and our liquidity, put the Company in an enviable position."

            Progress continues on the design of Iridium NEXT, with initial satellite launches planned for 2014. The Company expects to fund a majority of Iridium NEXT costs from internally generated cash flows, revenues from secondary payloads and warrant proceeds. The Company recently announced that it has engaged Goldman, Sachs & Co. as its lead global advisor for the additional funding of Iridium NEXT. The Company expects to announce the selection of its prime contractor for Iridium NEXT in the coming months.

Iridium also recently announced that it is now doing business in Mexico through its subsidiary Iridium Comunicaciones de Mexico SAPI de CV.

            "Mexico represents a significant opportunity for Iridium's expansion, given the country's extensive, open land masses with minimal telecommunications infrastructure, expansive coast lines, growing remote industries, border monitoring issues and the need for effective response tools in natural disasters," Desch said. "Our global coverage brings a unique and important communications service to the vibrant Mexican market and enables contiguous, cross-border service to our NAFTA region customers."

            Finally, the Company recently strengthened its Board of Directors by adding Brigadier General Peter M. Dawkins, U.S. Army (Ret.), founder and principal of ShiningStar Capital LLC.

Commercial Highlights

            In Iridium's machine-to-machine (M2M) business sector, subscribers continued to show the strongest area of growth for the Company, with a 45.2% increase in the third quarter period from the third quarter of 2008. Iridium experienced 48.3% growth in short burst data (SBD) service revenue during the third quarter period over the same quarter in the prior year.

            "Iridium's broad array of data communications applications continues to deliver value and cost-savings to a wide variety of industries," said Greg Ewert, executive vice president, global distribution channels, Iridium. "We expect international regulatory initiatives to continue to fuel growth for Iridium M2M services, as well. Regulations related to air traffic safety, maritime vessel tracking, homeland security and personal locator communications increase the requirements for organizations to outfit assets with services such as those Iridium offers."

            For example, related to regulations regarding personal locator communications, Iridium recently formed and launched the ProTECTS (Promotion of Two-way Emergency Communication and Tracking Systems) Alliance, inviting other mobile satellite services (MSS) companies and the emergency response community to work together to foster the adoption of portable, two-way satellite-based location, tracking and messaging technologies. Eleven Iridium service providers plan to offer two-way SBD solutions for personal locating, tracking and messaging through Iridium satellites.

            "While one-way emergency beacons can provide a valuable aid to life-saving services, they can have a high incidence of false alerts triggered by accidental activations, which result in costly emergency response efforts. This is becoming an international regulatory issue," Ewert said. "Iridium is leading an industry effort to establish standards for two-way satellite data links. Soldiers in the field, disaster relief workers, pipeline inspectors in remote oil fields, helicopter pilots fighting forest fires, scientific expeditions in the Antarctic and sailors on the high seas all rely on satellite location technology as a critical safety lifeline. Their needs are driving the demand for interactive bi-directional data links to help ensure that legitimate distress messages are heard and that help reaches them."

Government Highlights

            Iridium service revenue from its contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) grew 2.1% for the third quarter period compared to the third quarter of 2008.

            "The DoD continues to pursue and develop enhanced applications that rely on the truly global nature of the Iridium service," said Lt. Gen. John Campbell (USAF-Ret.), executive vice president, government programs, Iridium. "And we have the right set of partners in place to build and deliver them."

The U.S. Navy recently awarded Iridium service partner ITT Corp.'s NexGen Communications a $9.7 million firm-fixed-price contract to supply 1,450 distributed tactical communications systems radio only (DTCS-RO) devices. DTCS is an extension of "Netted Iridium" – a push-to-talk communications capability that enables over-the-horizon, on-the-move, beyond line-of-sight netted voice and data communications over the Iridium network for the tactical warfighter.

In the third quarter, Iridium announced, in conjunction with Boeing, achievement of two major milestones to further develop and demonstrate capability enhancements to the High Integrity Global Positioning System program (also known as iGPS) for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

            Other recent announcements demonstrating growth in DoD research and development around Iridium-based communications solutions include the U.S. Navy's deployment of autonomous underwater vehicles to provide Iridium-based, over-the-horizon, rapid environmental assessment to support mine-hunting operations, as well as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's use of an Iridium-based tracking and monitoring solution to improve vehicle fleet efficiency for its Office of Detention and Removal (DRO).

¹Non-GAAP Financial Measures

PERTH, Western Australia, and BETHESDA, Md., U.S.A. – November 11, 2009 – Fastwave Communications has received a contract from Chevron Australia Pty Ltd to supply a water quality monitoring system for the Gorgon offshore gas project based on Iridium satellite data links provided by Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM).

The system will provide monitoring of turbidity levels arising from dredging and spoil operations in waters near the gas processing plant location on Barrow Island.

The Fastwave system consists of underwater instrumentation modules positioned on the sea floor around the dredging and spoil disposal sites. Each subsea module contains turbidity sensors, data loggers, an Iridium short-burst data (SBD) modem and rechargeable battery packs. They are connected to small moored buoys which relay the data packets through the Iridium satellites to an environmental monitoring system onshore.

"We designed our underwater monitoring systems to take advantage of Iridium's global coverage, high network quality and low-latency, two-way SBD links, providing a robust solution capable of working reliably under extreme environmental conditions," said Nick Daws, Director, Fastwave.

Protection of the marine environment is a key priority for the Gorgon project and this will include a program of water quality monitoring using the Fastwave system. The system has all electronics and instrumentation packages in waterproof, hardened subsea capsules rather than in surface data buoys, providing extra protection from the cyclones that prevail in the region. The modules are designed to function at depths up to 50 meters with endurance of at least four months between battery recharges.

Dawkins was vice chairman of Global Wealth Management for Citigroup, vice chairman of the Citigroup Private Bank, and executive vice president and vice chairman of Travelers Insurance during an eleven-year tenure with the firm. Previously, from 1991 – 1996, he served as chairman and CEO of Primerica Financial Services, and earlier served as head of the U.S. consulting practice of Bain & Company. During his military career, Gen. Dawkins served as military assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense and was selected as a White House Fellow.

A 1959 graduate of West Point, Dawkins served in the U.S. Army for 24 years. He commanded a company in the 82nd Airborne Division, led a battalion in Korea, and commanded a brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1981.

Gen. Dawkins holds a Ph.D. and master's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. He was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and studied at Oxford University from 1959 through 1962. In 1963, Time magazine identified him as one of the "Top 50 Leaders in the U.S." and, in 2006, he received the Horatio Alger Award.

(NASDAQ: IRDM) announce that the U.S. Coast Guard has type-approved the CLS Thorium™ terminal for Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT). The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) recently awarded CLS a contract for the provision and operation of the European Union (EU) LRIT Data Centre, as well as the associated ASP and CSP functions. The EMSA LRIT Data Centre – the largest in the world – will not only enable the 27 EU Maritime Administrations, and those of Iceland and Norway, to track more than 10,000 vessels flying their flags, but will also request position reports of non-EU flag vessels entering EU coastal waters.

All major ASPs have certified the unit as LRIT compliant when delivering a Conformance Test Report according to the International Maritime Organization rules.

BETHESDA, Md. U.S. and WARRINGTON, U.K. – October 14, 2009 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) and H2OSatellite provided critical satellite communications for Beluga Shipping's successful pioneering transit of the challenging Northeast Passage this summer. The Beluga ships relied on Iridium OpenPort® high-bandwidth marine satellite systems supplied by H2OSatellite for voice and data links throughout their voyage through the extreme Northern waterways, most of which are not reliably covered by any other long-range communication service.

The exact position the two Beluga Shipping heavy lift project carriers stated in an e-mail to the Russian administration was 70° 16.7' North – 057° 33.4' East as they completed the historic voyage. Regarded as the Northeast Passage's official exit in a westerly direction by the Russian administration, the MV "Beluga Fraternity" passed the Nowaja Semlja archipelago on September 12, 2009, and sister vessel MV "Beluga Foresight" followed, leaving this symbolic spot in its backwash on September 16, 2009.

"By the completion of the Northeast Passage transit, and previously the safe offloading of the cargo in a rather remote area in Siberia, we have opened the gate to a seaway which will further gain in importance in the future," said Niels Stolberg, founder, president and CEO, Beluga Shipping GmbH.

The prospect of a successful Northeast Passage transit has only recently become feasible during a limited summer thaw window. In line with its company philosophy and commitment to innovation in products and procedures, Beluga Shipping realized the potential of the Northern sea route and began planning the challenging project more than 12 months ago.

As part of the intensive work by Beluga's meteorologists, masters, chartering and operations departments, and safety and security experts, Beluga approached its satellite communications partner, H2OSatellite, to advise on the best equipment to ensure dependable, uninterrupted communications at high latitude. H2OSatellite, which provides both airtime and

e-mail across the large Beluga fleet, had no hesitation in recommending the vessels be fitted with the new Iridium OpenPort high-bandwidth marine satcom system. Iridium OpenPort provides three independent voice circuits and a separate data connection scalable up to 128 kbps, all of which can be used simultaneously without interference.

As a former mariner, Robert Kenworthy, managing director of H2OSatellite, a Global Technology Ltd company, understood all too well the risks and challenges for the crews taking on the Northeast Passage and how crucial reliable communications were going to be.

"We knew that Iridium OpenPort was the only choice for full coverage in those extreme regions where other systems are patchy or non-existent," said Kenworthy. The Beluga F-class vessels MV "Beluga Fraternity" and MV "Beluga Foresight," both 12,744 deadweight tons (dwt), carried crews of 15 or 16 men and transported power plant equipment destined for the city of Surgut. The specialist ice class E3 heavy lift carriers have up to 360 metric tons crane capacity and, amongst the cargo, generators and 44 power plant modules weighing in excess of 200 tons each. Having been the first company to successfully use the Northeast Passage as a commercial route, Beluga Shipping believes that the opportunity to cut 3,000 nautical miles off the common route through the Suez Canal means others might soon follow.

BETHESDA, Md. and SINGAPORE – October 2, 2009 – Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) and Kemilinks International Pte Ltd (Kemilinks) announce that Kemilinks is now offering Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) through the Iridium satellite network.

Kemilinks acts as the LRIT Application Service Provider for the flag states of Kiribati, Tuvalu, Mongolia and, through its partners, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. As an Iridium Value-Added Reseller, Kemilinks is now able to sell and provision Iridium-based LRIT connectivity to ships flying those flags.

Under new regulations that the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted, ships subject to the International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) must be equipped with an approved LRIT device that reports its location and identification to a database operated by the administration under which the vessel is flagged. The database may be accessed by authorized users, such as national coast guards, at regular intervals.

The IMO LRIT carriage requirements apply to all vessels of 300 gross tonnage and above on international voyages, including passenger ships, cargo ships, high-speed craft and mobile offshore drilling units.

The LRIT carriage requirements came into effect January 1, 2009 for ships operating in all IMO Sea Areas except Sea Area A4. The deadline for ships operating in Sea Area A4 was July 1, 2009. All new ships subject to the LRIT regulations were required to comply by these dates, and current ships requiring retrofit equipment must comply by the date of their first radio survey after these deadlines. Ships certified in Sea Area A4 must comply by the earlier date when they are operating in other Sea Areas.

BETHESDA, Md. – September 17, 2009 – Iridium Satellite LLC (Iridium) is joining with mobile satellite industry companies and the emergency response community to form the ProTECTS (Promotion of Two-way Emergency Communication and Tracking Systems) Alliance. The primary goal of the alliance is to foster the rapid and orderly adoption of portable, two-way satellite-based location, tracking and messaging technologies.

The alliance will provide a forum for addressing issues affecting the suppliers and users of these vital safety devices. It also will seek to foster the development and deployment of

bi-directional satellite data solutions meeting the requirements of the growing population of government and business organizations using portable tracking devices, as well as the public-safety community.

“The ProTECTS Alliance will advocate for industry standards based on two-way satellite data links,” said Patrick Shay, vice president and general manager of Iridium’s data division. “Soldiers in the field, disaster relief workers, pipeline inspectors in remote oil fields, helicopter pilots fighting forest fires, scientific expeditions in the Antarctic and sailors on the high seas are all relying on satellite location technology as a critical safety lifeline, and the interactive

bi-directional data link helps ensure their distress messages are heard and that help reaches them.”

“While one-way emergency beacons can provide a valuable aid to life-saving services, experience has shown that they can have a high incidence of false alerts triggered by accidental activations,” observed retired Admiral James Loy, former U.S. Coast Guard Commandant and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security. “This places a heavy burden on first responders who must try to verify, by independent means, the validity of the distress signal before deploying rescue resources. The large number of distress alert messages makes it impractical – and prohibitively expensive – for authorities to launch search-and-rescue (SAR) operations without determining whether it is a real emergency or an inadvertent activation.”

To help further the goals of the ProTECTS Alliance, Iridium also is launching a strategic initiative to focus its internal engineering, R&D, product certification, activations, marketing and channel sales support resources to assist Service Partners (SP) in bringing these personal safety products and services to market.

Impeva Labs Receives HERO Certification
from U.S. Department of Defense for
Iridium-Based Satellite Tag

The DoD has awarded a Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) certification to the Impeva Labs, Inc. Global Sentinel^® satellite tag. Received only after extensive testing and evaluation by the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., this certification is a requirement for any electromagnetic transmitting device that operates in close proximity to explosive ordnance. The HERO certification allows Impeva to extend its services to provide continuous global monitoring for DoD cargo around the world. With satellite tracking comes the benefit of global coverage without any local infrastructure, such as cellular requires. This is an advantage for intermodal cargo containers when crossing an ocean, or transiting a remote area by train or truck. Impeva is already supporting DoD supply chains in demanding environments, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait. In related news, Impeva Labs and ARINC are teaming under a five-year U.S. Army contract to develop and demonstrate a variety of solutions for automatic identification technology (AIT) under the Next Generation Wireless Communications (NGWC) program for logistics applications.

Department of Homeland Security Improves Fleet
Efficiency with Iridium Tracking and Monitoring

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Detention and Removal (DRO) has selected Fleet Management Solutions (FMS) to supply an Iridium-based tracking and mobile resource management system for its fleet of vehicles. The FMS tracking equipment and hosted Web software will improve asset readiness, enhance mission effectiveness, reduce fleet costs and coordinate compliance with Federal Property Management Regulations (FPMR).

As part of DHS's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) organization, DRO promotes public safety and national security, and operates more than 4,000 specialty law enforcement and administrative vehicles. Accurate and timely accountability of fleet assets is critical to mission success. With the annual cost of fuel and maintenance for the fleet at more than $30 million, it is an important area of efficiency improvement for DHS.

"Managing a motor fleet is like counting ants in an ant farm," said Charles "Chuck" Welke, who is tasked with deployment of the tracking systems for the DRO Fleet Inventory and Communications Unit. "It cannot be done effectively without the latest technologies, which FMS provides."

U.S. Navy Awards Phase Two Netted Iridium Contract

The U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, has awarded a five-year indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity contract valued at more than $21.6 million to Iridium for development and delivery of the Distributed Tactical Communications System (DTCS). Also known as Netted Iridium, DTCS will provide push-to-talk beyond-line-of-sight netted voice and data communications for tactical warfighters on the move.

The new contract, awarded in June 2009, marks Phase Two of Netted Iridium development. Phase One, conducted under an industry-funded Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), provided a capability used for concept-based testing by the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory in Quantico, Va.

ITT Corporation is leading the effort to design, develop and produce the DTCS tactical radios and DTCS ground-based management system. The Boeing Company is updating software for the Iridium satellites, as well as performing systems integration and testing.

Iridium and Boeing Complete High Integrity
GPS Program Milestones

Iridium and The Boeing Company recently announced achievement of two major milestones to further develop and demonstrate capability enhancements to a High Integrity GPS program for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory.

The first milestone, completion of an enhanced narrowband software modification to computers on the Iridium satellites, permits second-generation GPS-aiding signals to be broadcast through the entire Iridium constellation. These broadcasts will enable rapid, more accurate position fixes. The second milestone was a demonstration of the acquisition of GPS signals under substantial jamming while moving in a vehicle.

Deep Siren Program Uses Iridium Satellite Links
for Communicating with Submerged Submarines

The Raytheon Company recently announced that it had successfully demonstrated the ability to communicate in real time with a submerged submarine at classified speeds and depths. The United Kingdom Royal Navy (RN) conducted a successful evaluation of the Deep Siren Tactical Paging (DSTP) system during the TAURUS 09 deployment. The RN sea trials followed U.S. Navy tests in 2008 culminating in a successful military utility assessment.

The Deep Siren program will enable secure, two-way communications with submarines operating below periscope depth and at tactical speeds, and is slated to be deployed across all classes of U.S. Navy submarines.

U.S. Navy Uses Iridium-Enabled Gliders for
Mine-Countermeasure Operations

The U.S. Navy is deploying underwater Slocum Gliders to provide over-the-horizon rapid environmental assessment to support mine-hunting operations. The Navy conducted sea trials of the capability during Exercise Arabian Gauntlet 2009 in the Persian Gulf. The gliders are capable of operating submerged for long periods of time gathering data on underwater conditions, such as salinity, temperature and water pressure, then surfacing to transmit the stored data through Iridium satellites to the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Iridium's SP, NAL Research, provided the Iridium SBD modems used on the gliders.

Station Fire Update ( Red Cross Shelter / Pet evacuation centers )

The Station Fire started off of Angeles Crest Highway (SR 2) about one mile above Angeles Crest Fire Station around 3:20 p.m., Wednesday, August 26. Los Angeles County Fire reported that this fire has burned 157,220 acres and is 51 percent contained as of 6:30p.m., Sunday, September 6. Approximately 7,000 structures are threatened at this time. 78 residences have been destroyed so far and 13 have been damaged. Over 4,861 personnel are working this fire. The Station Fire continues to actively burn. Today, fire crews have been catching spot fires to stop additional fire movement along with monitoring and patrolling with reassignment of crews to more active areas as necessary. Estimated cost of the Station Fire is estimated at $49,569,000. The Station Fire is now the 10th largest fire in California since 1932.

Over the next 24-36 hours, residents of the Los Angeles area and the San Gabriel Valley may see an increased amount of smoke and possibly some fire in the Mt. Wilson and Cogswell Dam areas. As part of fire crews' aggressive attack on the Station Fire, they may be burning vegetation ahead of the fire to establish a firm control line around the fire's perimeter. The specific area considered for these operations is an east-west line extending from East of Mt. Wilson to the western end of the Cogswell Reservoir.

Public safety and protection of property are of top priority. The potential burning will only be considered during favorable weather to minimize fire spread. As such, crews will be waiting for optimal conditions during the next 24-36 hours. Nighttime burns are possible. Firefighters will be constantly assessing the burn operations. If conducted, this operation will occur at a safe distance from homes and structures. No evacuations are necessary or anticipated. Residents should not be overly concerned, as the smoke and fire are part of the planned control activities. The understanding and cooperation of the surrounding communities are appreciated.

Two Los Angeles County firefighters were killed last Sunday, August 30, as they were fighting the Station Fire. It has been determined that the cause of the Station Fire is arson and is now a homicide investigation If you have any information or questions please contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at 323-573-2387.

Ten injuries have been reported. Law enforcement and Fire personnel are urging residents in the area to be ready to evacuate if near the fire boundary. Do not hesitate to move to a designated evacuation center.

The Governor proclaimed a state of emergency for Los Angeles County on August 28. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors proclaimed a local emergency, Tuesday, September 1, due to the various wildfires.

Station Fire Update (Area Closures, Road Closures, Health Advisory, Power Advisory)

Area Closures:
The Station Fire closure area consists of all National Forest System lands within the Angeles National Forest south and east of California State Route 14 and California State Route 138. Road closure status may change without notice.
Glendale: Dukmejian Wilderness Park
Angeles National Forest: Entire eastern main body of the Angeles National Forest will be closed until full containment of the Station Fire. For more information on the closure go to: www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/

Open to Residents Only (with identification):
• Little Tujunga Canyon Road and Live Oak Campground
• Aliso Canyon Road at Angeles Forest Highway
• Little Tujunga Canyon Road at ¼ mile north of the Wildlife Way Station

Road Closures:
• Big Rock Creek Road closed at Big Pines Road
• Highway 39 between San Gabriel Canyon Road and East Fork Road
• Big Tujunga Road 1 mile north of Mt. Gleason Road at the City/County line
• Soledad Canyon Road at Indian Canyon Trail Head
• Angeles Crest Highway between Big Pines Highway and mile marker 26.7 north of Altadena
• Big Pines Highway at SR-2
• Cheney Trail at Angeles National Forest gate (Loma Alta)

Roads Recently Reopened:
• Soledad Canyon Road-Freeway 14 (Santa Clarita)/Bootlegger Road (Acton)
• Little Tujunga Road-Osborne Street/ Gold Creek Road

Health Advisory:
Los Angeles Department of Public Health has issued a hazardous air quality advisory. Poor air quality is rapidly becoming a concern due to falling ash and potentially toxic smoke from burned materials. Health advisories and other public health information can be found at http://www.lapublichealth.org/. Extreme heat continues to be a problem. Residents are urged to stay indoors if at all possible. A list of cooling centers operated by L.A. County can be found at:

Power Advisory:
Southern California Edison urges its customers in the Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale areas to conserve energy due to transmission lines that have been damaged by the Station Fire. Edison officials asked customers to turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment, especially sensitive electronics.

Customers are advised to keep flashlights handy in case a service interruption occurs, not to use candles for lighting because they could pose a fire hazard, and not to cook indoors with charcoal or other fossil fuels not meant for indoor use because they could turn deadly.

If a power outage occurs, one light switch should be left in the on position to serve as a signal when service has been restored.
